7 Powerful Social Media Etiquette Tips For Job Seekers & Future Business Owners

Let’s face it: “big brother” is always watching. Whether you’re a job seeker or future business owner, it’s important that you always maintain great social media etiquette because you just never know.

This is a snapshot of why it is important to manage your online presence. In an effort to help steer you in the right direction, here are 7 Tips of Social Media Etiquette:

1. Status Updates: Posting content that relates to your area of study can position you as a candidate that stays current in his/her area of expertise. Including links to content solidifies that you’re actively identifying valuable content to share with your community.

2. Checking-In: Location-based check-ins such as Foursquare or Facebook Places can be a great way to connect with people in the real world. Your check-ins communicates a lot about you as a person, your lifestyle, the places you frequent and the time you visit those locations. Make sure what you’re sharing reflects what you want to communicate to the outside world.

3. Profanity on Facebook Wall: A recent study by Reppler, which studied 30K Facebook users, identified that 47% of Facebook walls contain profanity. Be sure to monitor and manage your Facebook wall because what’s there communicates a lot about your personal brand to potential employers—even if it’s your friends who are posting the profanity on your wall.

Hi Janelle,

Thanks for sharing this post by Hajj Flemings. As I read the 7 Etiquette Tips, I feel most of them are obvious “no no’s” online. I am very particular who I confirm as friends, and most of them are in marketing and professionals. I am proud to say for the most part, my newsfeed is pretty clean and very inspirational…most of the time. A good tip is to be aware of who you confirm as a friend. If I’ve made a mistake, I have removed anyone from my friends list who has practiced any of the abuses you listed. However, we’ve all seen it, profanity, anger, spamming, and inappropriate images. The important thing is for us to not engage in any of it.

It is just as important to practice great etiquette online, regardless if you are job seeking or not. It’s about character, integrity, leadership, and being on the cutting edge. Your social media circles can be the best place to showcase your awesomeness!

Hey Janelle,

Good advice here and not just for college seniors. Potential employers now check social media sites as part of the employment process. Potential friends and colleagues will check you out this way as well.

It’s important to be yourself but leave the four letter words and petty arguments in the real world where they can be forgotten.

Hi Janelle,

Great tips. I am shocked that 47% of people on Facebook use profanity. I’m pretty choosy who I pick. When someone does something unethical like profanity, tearing down another person, being negative, I delete them.

It is difficult to be the Facebook police on my site, but the people there are professional for the most part.

As for Status Updates – You just need to do them! It keeps the relationships going. The only thing that is getting under my skin lately is when someone posts 15 or more updates at the same time grrrrr…..

This is a great beginning of a list of etiquette. I think at times we forget about proper etiquette on social media because we forget it isn’t in person and isn’t as personal but in reality it is as personal if not more personal because we are talking to thousands of people a day on social media websites. I am going to read the rest of the list and can’t wait to see what it has for me!
